Learn how to type the square root symbol or sign (√) in Windows PC, Mac, Android smartphone and Microsoft Word with these easy steps.
To use the Mac keyboard shortcut, click the location where you want to insert the square root symbol, then press “Option” + “V.” To use the Windows keyboard shortcut, press and hold “Alt,” then hit “2,” “5,” and “1” on the numeric keypad—it won’t work with the numbers at the top of the keyboard.
Press and hold the Alt key on your keyboard. As you hold on to the Alt key, press 251 (the square root symbol’s Alt code) on the numeric keypad at the right-hand side of the keyboard. Then release the Alt key. The square root symbol will immediately be inserted as soon as you let go of the Alt key.
